Knowledge Intensive SMEs

Small and medium-sized knowledge intensive firms play a strategic role in fostering the innovation process and are a significant source of national knowledge-based wealth creation.

In conjunction with The Nous Group, DIIRD conducted four case studies of successful Victorian-based knowledge-intensive small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in an effort to understand the:

  • the structure of the industry in which these firms operate
  • the various business factors considered by managers throughout the commercialisation process
  • the impact of location choices by these firms on the commercialisation process
  • the extent to which the process was enhanced by cross-border and multidisciplinary networks

Presents preliminary insights drawn from case studies, complemented by research on contemporary theoretical developments in the study of knowledge intensive SMEs, experience from around the world and observations on public policy approaches
