Newly incorporated into DIIRD are the industry development and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) investment functions of Multi Media Victoria (MMV), boosting the department's capacity in a key infrastructure area.
The nature of global production has been transformed by developments in computing, communications and distribution. The Government's ICT Industry Plan 2010 recognises the crucial role ICT and related infrastructure (broadband) has in underpinning the competitiveness of many industries.
The next generation broadband infrastructure, many times faster than that currently available, will further enable competitive supply of services and develop innovative applications in areas such as health, research, industry and education.
